Thomas Johnson's Note on Letter 165

MANUSCRIPT: HCL (L 11). Ink. Dated: Sunday Evening.

PUBLICATION: FF 192-195, in part.

When this letter was written, Austin was within a few weeks of his Law School examination and admission to the Massachusetts bar. Susan Gilbert had been planning to join her sister Martha at Geneva, New York, shortly, but she was not able to go before August. Horace Church had recently been put in charge of the Dickinson grounds. For a note on little Pat, see Appendix 2. Emily Fowler Ford had come home for a visit, as ED hoped when she wrote to her earlier in the spring.
