Professor Haven came to Amherst in 1850. The president, at this time, was Edward Hitchcock. B.F. Newton, married on June 4, was already stricken with pulmonary tuberculosis, and died within two years; his wife was twelve years older than he. Austin was a member of Alpha Delta Phi fraternity.
