Louis Kossuth visited the United States in the winter and spring of 1852, and was received with great enthusiasm. His pictures show him wearing a hat with a flat-topped crown, wide brim, with a plume attached to one side. The sales of the American copies were enormous.

Gordon Ford and Emily Fowler were married late in 1853. Austin came home on April 7 and stayed five days.
