letters from dickinson to elizabeth carmichael

Thomas Johnson's Note on Letter 665

MANUSCRIPT: missing.

PUBLICATION: L (1894) 418-419; L (1931) 407-408.

Mrs. Todd dated the letter "1882?" Because the story about Gilbert repeats the account in the letter to Sue, above, one surmises that the two letters were written about the same time. The allusion in the first sentence is to Longfellow's "The Courtship of Miles Standish."

Among the penciled jottings (AC) dating from about this time is the following recipe for coconut cake, which ED evidently obtained from Mrs. Carmicahel. It is published in Home 115.

1 pound sugar -
1/2 - Butter -
1/2 - Flour -
6 eggs -
1 grated Cocoa Nut -

Mrs. Carmichael's -
