MANUSCRIPT: missing. The text is from a transcript of the autograph made when it was on exhibit at the Jones Library in 1935.

PUBLICATION: Kate Dickinson Sweetser, Great American Girls (1931) 135; Poems (1955) 899.

Joseph Sweetser walked out of his New York apartment on the evening of 21 January 1874, and was never subsequently traced. Many papers carried the account. The Springfield Republican noted it on 29 January.
