Although the nature of Emmons's "beautiful writing" is not specified, it is possible he had lent ED a copy of his dissertation "Sympathy in Action," presented at the Spring Exhibition on April 19. The two notes to Emmons that follow this apper to form a sequence, and since there is no way to date them exactly, they have been placed here together.
