letters from dickinson to higginson

late April 1886

Dear friend.

The beautiful Sonnet confirms me-Thank you for confiding it-

The immortality she gave
We borrowed at her Grave-
For just one Plaudit famishing,
The Might of Human Love-

The sweet Acclamation of Death divulges it - There is no Trumpet like the Tomb-

Of Glory not a Beam is left
But her Eternal House-
The Asterisk is for the Dead,
The Living, for the Stars-

Did you not give her to me?

Your Scholar.
