Thomas Johnson's Note on Letter 845

MANUSCRIPT: Morgan Library. Pencil. Unpublished.

It is impossible to be sure whether this letter was sent next door on an occasion when Sally Jenkins, Mattie's friend now living in Pittsfield, was visiting her, or whether it was sent to Pittsfield at a time Mattie was visiting Sally. The fold of the letter bears no address, which customarily it would do if it had been sent next door. To ED the sound of the voices could come from either place. No envelope survives. The story of the witch of Endor is in 1 Samuel 28.
