Thomas Johnson's Note on Letter 867

MANUSCRIPT: Pohl. Pencil. Unpublished.

The handwriting is unmistakably late 1883. Very early in October, Gilbert Dickinson was stricken with typhoid fever, and died after a few days' illness, on 5 October. No death during ED's lifetime more deeply shocked and grieved her. This letter was probably written during Gilbert's illness, but before he died.
