MANUSCRIPTS: About 1864, in packet 91 (Bingham 70d). A second copy, now lost, is discussed below.

PUBLICATION: Letters (ed. 1894), 335; (ed. 1931), 324; also LL (1924), 311: among the letters to Maria Whitney. The poem, signed "Emily," constitutes the entire letter; Maria Whitney's sister Sarah (Whitney) Learned died 9 July 1864, at Plymouth, Connecticut. The first line of the printed text reads:

How well I know her not
