I agree that # 690 is a bitter comment about God, perhaps EDs most outspoken jab in her life-long jousting with God and Christianity. Victory might also have a meaning not yet proposed: a Christian one. Webster, a dictionary ED was known to have studiously surfed, gives as one definition "2. The advantage or superiority gained over spiritual enemies, over passions and appetites, or over temptations, or in any struggle or competition. 'Thanks be to God, who giveth us the victory, through our Lord Jesus Christ.'" This meaning seems especially possible since the first four lines appear to refer to a burial. I do not suggest, however, that this meaning of "victory" is the only acceptable one. ED sponsored ambiguity. The last two lines are elusive. What oath does God reveal through sparrows? And why do sparrows have "little love" that gives them knowledge of how to starve? What does "little love" mean? These may be ED's Christian associations which I simply don't get. Can anybody help? Victory comes late - And is held low to freezing lips - Too rapt with frost To take it-- How sweet it would have tasted - Just a drop - Was God so economical? His Table's spread too high for Us - Unless We dine on tiptoe - Crumbs - fit such little mouths - Cherries - suit Robins - The Eagle's Golden Breakfast strangles - Them - God keep His Oath to Sparrows - Who of little Love - know how to starve - Louis --part0_896660759_boundary--
