  In her Annals of the Evergreens written for her children, our mother
has recalled her acquaintance with Mrs. Burnett and Harriet Beecher
Stowe. My part in the luncheon she describes for the former was to
keep small Gilbert happy out of doors, so my glimpse of her was only
as they strolled across the lawn afterward luncheon, at that season blue
with violetr [sic].
