returning with accounts of the 
various things she had found in  
her reconnoitering of the house with 
eager questions as to their price. 
Then after trying to draw me  
into a religious discussion she 
would tell me in firm tones there 
was something radically wrong 
with the baby - his head was too  
large - his crying unnatural 
She never had seen nothing like 
him - and could not stay another 
day to fuss with him.  At first - 
she was profuse with advice - 
I must drink biled[?] water, 
then gool-thread[?] which she 
drew from her pocket, steeped 
and poured down the tiny throat - 
would save us all - then this  
old root grated + sweetened 
or that herb steeped with
