Thomas Johnson's Note on Letter 167

MANUSCRIPT: HCL (L 12). Ink (except for postscript, which is in pencil). Dated: Tuesday night.

PUBLICATION: FF 195, in part.

The Reverend Edward S. Dwight was installed in the First Church, July 19. Austin was graduated from the Law School on July 19, but did not stay to receive his diploma because his mother wished him to take her to the semicentennial celebration of Monson Academy, held July 17-18. (Edward Dickinson did not return from Washington until August 7.) Austin then went back to Cambridge, packed up, and returned permanently to Amherst. This letter must have been written either on July 25 or August 1.
