Austin came unexpectedly to Amherst to vote on election day, Monday, November 10, and returned to Boston that afternoon. Hawthorne's The House of the Seven Gables, in which Clifford Pyncheon and his sister Hepizbah are principal characters, was published in the spring of 1851.
