letters from dickinson to higginson

Thomas Johnson's Note on Letter 459

MANUSCRIPT: BPL (Higg 85). Ink.

PUBLICATION: L (1931) 296, in part.

Higginson's trips in 1876, according to his diary (HCL), were short ones to fill speaking engagements.

In this letter ED says that conjecture (anticipation, expectation) does not match or surpass discovery (the event). But see letter no. 442, where she seems to imply the opposite.
