Thomas Johnson's Note on Poem 1511

No manuscript of this poem has been located. The text here reproduces the published version. ED enclosed a copy of it, together with three others, in a letter she wrote T.W. Higginson (Letters [ed. 1931 only], 314-315) in early summer, 1881. She seems to have written the poem to commemorate Independence Day and in the letter she calls it "My Country's Wardrobe."

PUBLICATION: Poems (1891), 52, titled as above.
