Thomas Johnson's Note on Poem 1647

MANUSCRIPT: Early spring 1886, in a letter to T. W. Higginson (BPL Higg 102). Helen Hunt Jackson died 12 August 1885. ED is replying to a letter from Higginson in which he had evidently enclosed a transcript of his sonnet "To the Memory of H. H." ED's reply incorporates two separate elegiac quatrains, of which this is the second. For the other, see poem no. 1648.

PUBLICATION: Letters (ed. 1931 only), 321.
