letters from dickinson to elizabeth holland

Thomas Johnson's Note on Letter 475

MANUSCRIPT: HCL (H 36). Pencil. Addressed on fold: Mrs. Holland.

PUBLICATION: LH 106.

The letter contained an enclosure, and the request is worded as though the "burden" were not new. It was understood by the Holland family that ED made a practice of asking Mrs. Holland to address and forward letters to the Reverend Charles Wadsworth. The quotation is from Jane Eyre, chapter 15.
