President Garfield, shot on 2 July, lingered through the summer and died, 19 September. On Howell's A Fearful Responsibility, which ED was finding not to her taste, see letter no. 714. The August issue of Scribner's Monthly, in which the Howells novel was concluded, also contained a poem by Holland: "To My Dog Blanco."
