Thomas Johnson's Note on Letter 747

PUBLICATION: L (1894) 187; L (1931) 179; LH 157.

This note to some member of the Holland family was originally published (1894) in such a way as to appear to be attached to letter no. 742, and later printings so rendered it. Actually it is a separate note. In September 1884 Kate Holland Van Wagenen called at the Dickinson home (see letter no. 936), and possibly this notes was delivered to her at that time. But the handwriting seems to be earlier, and was perhaps sent to Mrs. Holland in the spring of 1882. The quotation paraphrases the opening of 1 Peter 1.8: "Whom not having seen, ye love. . . " (see also letter no. 671).
