Kate and Bleecker Van Wagenen, vacationing in Northampton, drove to Amherst, 17 September. He was a member of the publishing firm of Dodd, Mead and Company. They called at the Dickinson's and were received by Lavinia; ED did not see them. The quotation in the third paragraph is from Galatians 5.22: "But the fruit of the spirit is love. . . "
