Correspondence with Susan Dickinson

Most of Dickinson's readers know her letters and poems through Thomas Johnson's editions. Thus, while the editors for Emily Dickinson's Correspondences are developing markup and annotations, such as the correspondence with Susan Dickinson (see above), we are working with Johnson's representations in order to compare his transcriptions with ours. The Dickinson Editing Collective operates on the principle that the more pairs of eyes that are turned on the primary evidence (in this case, Emily Dickinson's manuscripts or the earliest known transcriptions of her writings), the more accurate our understanding of what she actually wrote will be. By facilitating a process that enables more pairs of eyes to examine primary evidence and compare results, then, we hope to advance the wonderful work of Johnson and others who have transcribed her work before. Doing so will also enable us to examine the transmission of knowledge about this poet's praxes, and, not least of all, the problem of dating her many texts. As we work through each correspondence, Johnson's representations will be indicated by our notes, which will refer to his #s, as well as any differences we are recording between his transcriptions and ours. Readers are encouraged to consult his three-volume The Letters of Emily Dickinson, recently reprinted as a single-volume edition. Also useful is Cynthia MacKenzie's Concordance to the Letters of Emily Dickinson (Colorado 2000).
