Pinholes. Johnson identifies the biblical allusion: "But the fearful, and unbelieving. . .and all liars,
shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death"
(Revelations 21:8). Austin and Mabel have been carrying on their affair for some time, and
perhaps Emily refers to that.
