A friend of both Bowles and Holland, Albert D. Briggs of Springfield, was appointed one of the Massachusetts railroad commissioners on 22 November. The quotation is from Hebrews 12.6: ". . . whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth. . ." The letter implies that ED had sent Mrs. Holland her recipe for gingerbread, doubtless the same as that which she supplied Susan Dickinson, who added it to her manuscript cookbook. It follows below.
