letters from dickinson to elizabeth holland

Thomas Johnson's Note on Letter 805

MANUSCRIPT: HCL (H 77). Pencil.

PUBLICATION: LH 172-173.

Perhaps it was Kate Van Wagenen herself who suggested sending photographs of the Holland daughters which ED here acknowledges. Mrs. Holland was becoming subject to rheumatic attacks. ED later sent a variant of the same four lines of verse to Samuel Bowles the younger (see letter no. 902). It is because Kate is married, the poem implies, that her question is answered.
