FF 231 and 266-267, excerpts only. Johnson notes that "Susan's friend Gertrude Vanderbilt was accidentally wounded by a gun shot on 20 March 1864. A daughter, Susan Gilbert Smith, was born 8 September 1864 to Susan's sister, Martha Gilbert Smith."
